Solvent-free adhesives

Since Intercol was founded in 1972, many solvent-based adhesives used for all kinds of applications have been replaced by water-based adhesives from Intercol. These water-based adhesives are usually based on:

Hot melt, also free from volatile substances

Hot melt adhesives have also been added to the Intercol range since 1998. Hot melt adhesives are typical because they contain 100% solids. The liquid phase is achieved by heating these adhesives in a specially developed hot-melt adhesive system to a temperature of usually between 100 ° C and 200 ° C. These hot melt adhesive systems are widely available worldwide, the various leading brands of hot melt adhesive systems include Nordson, Robatech and Valco Melton.

Your production process

Many production processes have been designed in recent years to work as optimally as possible and built as compact as possible. New, more environmentally friendly adhesives can have different processing properties. That is why the application of an environmentally friendly, biobased and biodegradable adhesive has the best chance if there is still the possibility and space to adapt the production process and the materials to be glued.

Biobased adhesives

There are various raw materials that Intercol can use in its adhesives, which are of a biological or renewable nature.

  • EVA hot melts for packaging, paper, cardboard, glass, metal,
  • PSA hotmelts
    • EHM 8936, 55% biobased
  • Starch
    • PL 681
      • 99% biobased,
  • Polysaccharides
    • PL 215/1> 85%
  • Dextrin
    • DE 255/2 G SML12
  • Casein
  • Gelatin

Biobased additives

Biobased additives are also available for biobased adhesives, such as:

  • Adhesion improvers
  • Rheology regulators
  • Means to make the glue thinner
  • Thickeners
  • Dyes
  • Wetting agents
  • Means that promote water resistance
  • Agents that promote water solubility
  • Tackifiers

Although a biobased adhesive will probably have its limitations compared to synthetic adhesives, there is still a lot to be optimized for a biobased adhesive for your bonding process.

Biodegradable adhesives

Biodegradable adhesives do not necessarily have to be biobased. Many of our current adhesives already largely degrade in the environment. Depending on your specific objective, we can further optimize certain adhesives in order to achieve perfect machine efficiency and biodegrade work with a non-biobased adhesive.

Biobased & Biodegradable

There are also 100% biobased, vegetable, biodegradable adhesives available. These are, for example, glues based on starch, with the help of the right additives we can improve the properties of starch glues in terms of running properties and adhesion.

Compostable adhesives

Whether glues are compostable usually depends strongly on the combination of the materials to be glued and the glue. It helps if the glue is easily water soluble. There are various basic raw materials glue that we can use to achieve a biocompostability of your end product.

Compostable products must meet the requirements of the European standard for compostable packaging EN-13432 in a professional composting installation.

Microplastics

Most of our water-based adhesives are also water-soluble. After these have been dissolved in water, the particles are almost immediately smaller than 50 µm. This can differ greatly per type of glue. It is therefore important to check this for specific types of glue.

Replacing plastic

Intercol's adhesives are often used to reduce or eliminate the use of plastic.

  • For the production of paper carrier bags
  • For the production of paper and cardboard packaging
  • By replacing stretch wrap film with a non-slip application
  • The inline application of adhesives in a production process
    • The plastic backing material of the tape is omitted
    • It is much cheaper after a one-time small investment
    • The products are often stronger due to a better mutual connection

Vegan gluing

Synthetic adhesives initially appear to be vegan, yet many adhesives appear to contain a very small proportion of animal raw materials. To be able to call your products 100% vegan, Intercol has some adhesives that are 100% vegan, such as the hot melt EHM 5086 V (Vegan).

Intercol

Intercol has been involved in the production and promotion of solvent-free adhesives since its foundation. In doing so, we also annually reduce our environmental impact by making operations more efficient and less environmentally harmful.
